Ointments & Pastes
4 types of ointment base, categorized to their water holding capacity/water miscibility characteristics.
1- Hydrocarbon bases: Paraffins
>Immiscible w/ water, low water absorbing capacity. Restricts water loss by increasing skin hydration, encouraging absorption of some medicaments thru the skin.
2-Absorption bases: Wool Alcohols, Beeswax
>Capable of absorbing water & aqueous solution to produce water-in-oil emulsions.
3- Water miscible bases: Emulsifying wax+ simple fatty vehicles = emulsifying ointment (anhydrous mixture)
4- Water soluble (hydrophilic) bases: Macrogols=polyethers formed by condensation of ethylene glycol.

Sorry, Finals in couple a' weeks.
